With a background in the Melbourne food & beverage industry, we discovered Matcha a number of years ago and were captivated by it’s rich history and ceremony, the alert sense of being it created as well as it’s health benefits.
Driven by experiementation we moved from drinking and then cooking with Matcha, to creating alternative blends - some of which we thought were truly delicious and seemed an ideal way to make our favourite drink accessible. No grand tea master required here! Just simple, pure blends.
Ours is a contemporary take on the ancient, respecting the traditional principles of harmony, purity & tranquillity; blending pure, fine grade Japanese Matcha with simple ingredients to create beautiful blends for daily consumption.
The name Konomi roughly translates from Japanese Romaji to “preferred taste or blend” and seemed the perfect way to capture the essence of our brand and purpose. Our blends are Konomi!
In the 11th century, a revered Japanese monk (Eisai) carried tea seeds from China to Japan and sowed the first tea plantation in Uji, Kyoto.
The zen-monks found that the magical brew created a calm state of alertness, providing focus for their intense study and meditation periods.
Today Matcha is grown in several regions, with the highest quality leaves grown in the Kyoto and Aichi prefectures.
The harvest process is indeed special . . .
Prior to harvest the tea bushes are shaded from direct sunlight to slow down growth, increase chlorophyll & amino acids resulting in a sweet taste and deep emerald colour in the leaf.
The best young leaves are plucked and laid out flat to dry. Veins and stems are meticulously removed, before the leaf is ground into a fine bright green powder using hand carved granite stones . . . Matcha!
Konomi uses only Japanese Matcha grown in the undulating hills of Uji in Kyoto prefecture.
We source a high grade ceremonial Matcha, as well as a delicious standard grade perfect for Latte’s and Smoothies or enjoyed simply on its own.
Our blending ingredients (sourced from the best suppliers in Australia and abroad) compliment and work in harmony with Matcha’s sweet umami taste.
Konomi blends are made for daily use - from making lattes or smoothies, yoghurt or cereal toppings to sprinkling on your eggs or baking.

When drinking Matcha you are consuming the whole tea leaf and all it's goodness.
Eisai (our 11th century zen-monk) penned a journal called “kissa yōjōki” (rough translation = “How to stay healthy by drinking tea”), one of the first texts linking tea and health . . . since then much research has been done on Matcha's benefits, here's a few:
Matcha is a rich concentrated source of antioxidants with up to 130 times the antioxidants of regular green tea or 6 times that of the super food Gojiberries. Antioxidants can help the body fight disease; they also support maintaining a healthy immune system.
L-Theanine is the main amino acid in Matcha and is almost exclusively found in tea. L-theanine is known to enhance brain function while producing a calming effect on the central nervous system.
The beautiful jade colour of Matcha is due to its’ rich chlorophyll content. Chlorophyll is known to be a natural detoxifier as well as having anti-inflammatory properties.
Vitamins and Minerals
Matcha is rich in protein, calcium, iron, potassium and vitamins A and C.
Yes, Matcha has a decent caffeine hit. But thanks to L-theanine combination, the caffeine is slowly released – no jitters, no caffeine crash, just a calm state of alertness.
